Significant Emissions From Forest Drainage Ditches—An Unaccounted Term in Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Inventories?

چکیده
Forestry is a natural climate solution for removing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and reaching net zero emissions. Managed boreal forests typically have extensive drainage ditch networks, these can be hotspots of anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, potentially offsetting the terrestrial gain. However, there lack data detailing GHG emissions from ditches on mineral soils, where most forestry occurs. Here, we address this knowledge gap using two approaches. First, conducted synoptic campaign to measure summer fluxes 109 forest draining soils within one local region. We found clear control water level methane (CH4), with dry variable, but often high, water-filled ditches. Almost all acted as sources CO2, regardless status. Second, reanalyzed published set streams across three regions concentrations had been repeatedly measured detailed catchment information was available. Within categorized 76 into peatland catchments detected no difference in mean CH4 CO2 between soil types. large those Using literature values uptake demonstrate that are particularly important offset uptake. Ignoring which origin, will lead incorrect estimates landscape-scale budget.

Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Airport Inventories: An Overview
For some years now, problems relating to gas emissions that affect climate and result from human activities have assumed a global dimension of large importance. The climate is, indeed, influenced by the concentrations of some pollutants in the atmosphere; these pollutants trap the long wave radiation emitted by the Earth and alter the energy balance, causing an accentuation of the natural green...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from tropical forest degradation: an underestimated source
BACKGROUND The degradation of forests in developing countries, particularly those within tropical and subtropical latitudes, is perceived to be an important contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. However, the impacts of forest degradation are understudied and poorly understood, largely because international emission reduction programs have focused on deforestation, which is easier to d...
متن کاملGreenhouse gas emissions from rice
Rice provides the staple food for over 60% of the world’s population. Globally 80% of rice is grown by small farmers in low income and developing nations, and in India rice farming is a key source of employment for the 60% of Indian workers still dependent on agriculture for work. Yet rice production is also an important source of greenhouse gas emissions, for example responsible for between 3 ...
